I am back. I just have not been feeling very bloggy lately. I will do better!

I had a very busy three days at work before today's break. However, I have some very good news - I got a bonus! I was extremely surprised; mostly because bonuses are very rare where I work, and I had never received one before. It wasn't a huge amount or anything, but it is definitely appreciated nevertheless. I got all teary-eyed and so did my manager. She said that I deserve it (and more) because of the hard work I did in 2004 and the projects that I will be taking on in 2005.

Today we had Thanksgiving lunch/dinner at The Cohutta Lodge. We had to wait for 2 hours to eat. That was slightly irritating to say the least. They weren't very organized. But when we did finally get to sit down, the food was good and we had a fine time. It was nice to see everyone on Mom's side of the family. They are all very special to me. I am already looking forward to seeing them at Christmastime.

Well, I have to go think of some questions for Friday's Feast. I will write more later (but not 5 days from now - much sooner!).

One big long Sunday post

#1 - I am already sick and tired of hearing about that stupid basketball brawl that happened last Friday night. Talk about a slow news weekend. I think they should all be thrown in jail for about 20 years. Why would anyone who makes millions of $ a year be mad enough to punch people and throw stuff? I've seen 3 year-olds play better than that. Grow up, boys.

#2 - I've started playing around with Where's George again. I got really into this last February, but it just got boring after a while. I'm sure I'll get bored with it again soon, but for now, it's fun. It is neat to see where your $ ends up and how long it takes it to get there.

#3 - Go here: American Soldier. Watch it and remember them when you give thanks this coming Thursday. They are a big reason why we can live the way we do.

#4 - I'm looking forward to a short week next week. It's going to be a busy one, though, but that's okay.

#5 - Unconscious Mutterings
Reconnect: intimate
Gearshift: car
Mania: craziness
Manhattan: New York
First date: Jimmy Cribb (*cringe*)
District: city
Yearbook: high school
Breakup: junior high
Episode: sitcom
Costume: Halloween

Movie Review: National Treasure

National Treasure

My hubby and I saw this movie this afternoon, and it was really great. I have always been a sucker for any movie related to American history, and this one delivers! Nicholas Cage is a fabulous actor, and he was perfectly cast for the role of Benjamin Franklin Gates, who is a man of several generations who have been looking for a treasure that the Founding Fathers had hidden from the British during the American Revolution. There are many clues that have to be figured out and followed (usually to find yet another clue) in order to find the treasure. And of course there are another group of not-so-nice people trying just as hard to find the same treasure. I won't tell you what the treasure is, but they do find it, and it is awesome! Go see it for yourself. I give this movie 4 stars.

Friday's Feast

Appetizer
What do you think is the perfect age to get married? Nah, who is it you look forward to seeing at one of the holidays just to be able to sit around and chat with? Sure, even someone you see during the rest of the year!
I look forward to seeing everyone in my family, I love them all. Mostly, though, I love talking with my two cousins, Alison and Holly. They are like the sisters I never had.

Twosome: diets- Have you ever tried one of the "fad" diets out there? Yes, I include Atkins in this category! How did it work for you? Would you do it again or try another one?
As someone who has fought a lifelong never-ending battle with their weight, of course I have tried fad diets. Including Atkins. Atkins works pretty good for me, but it is impossible to stick to. After Thanksgiving, I am planning on eating foods with a low glycemic index # (similar to Atkins, except you can have wheat bread and some fruits).

Threesome: on Thanksgiving- What's your favorite dish? Would you be happy just pigging out on turkey, or do you need all the fixings? Does the pumpkin pie make the meal or do you prefer Mom's green bean casserole?
To me, there is nothing better than a bite of dressing with a bite of whole cranberry sauce. She and I share a very special (and precious and rare) bond for which I am so deeply thankful. Not only are we mother and daughter, we are also best friends. I even call her "Mommers" or "Mommyfriend" sometimes.

She has sacrificed a lot for me during her lifetime, and I hope she knows that I'm forever grateful for everything she has ever done. She raised me to know the difference between right and wrong. She instilled in me a good work ethic. She took care of me when I was sick (and still does, now that I think about it). She punished me when I needed it, and continues to gently correct me when I am wrong (but we all know that isn't very often, right?). She has loved me unconditionally for almost 27 years now.

Any thing that is good about me came first from God, but was nurtured by my good and loving parents, and I adore them both so very much. Thank You, Lord, for my mother and father, and for all of life's beautiful blessings that You have so graciously bestowed upon us.

The Good and Bad of BlogExplosion

I have enjoyed the traffic I've received since joining BlogExplosion. And I've definitely enjoyed surfing other's blogs, and many of them are now regular reads for me.

But naturally, being the pessimist that I am, I have to point out the bad parts of BlogExplosion. Such as the low votes that I've received simply because of what I believe. And, while surfing, I have seen several blogs that might as well say "Hi, I'm stupid, and this is my stupid blog where I have stupid graphics and write stupid thoughts." Nevertheless, despite the numerous stupid blogs, it is addictive. I can't quit surfing. And, I got pretty ticked off when I submitted my banner and they wouldn't accept it because it has a pop-up ad, which is not my fault, but Blogger's.

So I think I'm going to put BlogExplosion on the back burner for a little while and concentrate more on other things. I'm getting geared up to read one book per week in 2005, and I'm pretty excited about it. I'm not giving up on my blog or anything - I enjoy it too much. It's simply time for me to "Just Say No" to BlogExplosion. At least for a while.

Do I smell Amsterdam?

I found this awesome site today: Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab... and I purchased 2 bottles of their special perfume.

If you are a woman (or love one and want to buy her something neat) I would suggest taking a look at their fragrances. They are divided into categories such as Wanderlust (named after places of the world), Illyria (named after Shakesperean characters), and Love Potions. I started to feel achy in my arms and chest. But then I noticed that I felt much better and didn't hurt anywhere after I ate lunch. This morning when I woke up (after not having anything to eat since dinner last night) it felt like there was a dull knife in the pit of my stomach. I know this is an ulcer because I had one before. The only time when it doesn't hurt is when it's recently been fed.

So here's yet another lesson I had to learn the hard way. Stress, worry, screaming at people with Kerry bumper stickers on their cars, and other self-destructive behavior is not good. And it doesn't help matters, either. President Bush was re-elected, and even if I had sat back and just let it go, he still would have been re-elected. There would have been nothing I could have done, either way.

One day I'll learn. We decided to have "snack day" here at work today to celebrate our manager's birthday. (No matter what's going on around this place, we always commemorate the occasion with food - that's one of the many reasons I've gained 30 pounds since working here.)

Anyway... I spent the better part of 2 hours last night making some really yummy tortilla roll-ups, with chopped red pepper, green onions, cream cheese, garlic, and seasoned salt. And then I get here this morning and everyone else has brought the crappiest stuff.

We have:
A small container of chocolate thingies from Wal-Mart.
3 (count em' - 3!) plates with a block of cream cheese plopped down with some kind of jelly or sauce poured on top.
3 boxes of crackers. (You can't have cream cheese with crap on top without some crackers, you know!)
Some "cat poop" cookies.
Some pigs-in-a-blanket.

Now, I don't mind going to the trouble to make my roll-ups. It was my choice what to bring, and I could have signed up for chips or something. I just don't understand why some people are so cheap and lazy.

Nevertheless - Happy birthday, manager of mine! Hope you like cream cheese!

What my birth month says about me...

I have marked in bold which ones are true, and crossed out the ones that are not.

MARCH
Attractive personality. Is there someplace you think it would be cool to spend a holiday? Christmas in the Alps? St. Patrick's Day in Erie? Oh, sure, take the entire family if you'd like!
Ooh, this is a fun one. I think it would be cool to spend Christmas in Australia since the weather there is smack-dab summertime in December. Or, of course, St. Patrick's Day in Ireland would totally rock.

Twosome: Weary-- Have you ever had to deal with jet lag? How have you handled it? ...and which direction is worse for you, going East or going West? Just curious...
I was in the marching band in high school, and we were invited to perform in the 1995 New Year's Day Parade in London, England. So the 10-hour trip over there in the middle of the night caused some definite jet lag. My band director wouldn't let us go to sleep that whole first day so we would be pooped by that night and would sleep hard and that would get us on their schedule. It worked!

Threesome: Traveler-- When you've traveled, what conveyance has bothered you the most? That camel in Morocco? The train ride through the Rockies? Your brother-in-law's Dodge? What just set your nerves on edge?
Same trip as above... I really did not enjoy barfing into a map on a tour bus. I didn't care for their food in England, so I didn't eat much. I took my medicine on an empty stomach that morning, and it was just bad!

Work: Peaks & Valleys

I once heard someone say that marriages have their "peaks and valleys" (a.k.a. good times and bad times). I have since attributed that idea to my own marriage, as well as my job.

I've been employed with the same company for just over 4 years. During that time I have had 1 promotion and a couple of decent raises, and I also earned my bachelor's degree in organizational management. Now, before I go any further, I want to stress the fact that I'm not saying that I'm any better than anyone else on my team. I just happen to be the only one with a college degree. And recently, I have taken the initiative to improve myself and my career. I spoke with my manager and we are working toward another promotion for me around the beginning of 2005.

Part of the promotion will give me a little bit more authority over my peers than I have right now. Let's say the manager is level 1, the team leader is a level 2, and everyone else is a level 3. Well, my promotion, if I get it (and I think I will) will put me somewhere between a 2 and a 3.

In today's team meeting, my manager mentioned that I will be beginning to work on some projects with her and the team leaders. While most of the group seemed to logically accept this as a natural progression of someone who has been here (and worked hard!) for 4 years, there were definitely a few who didn't warm up to the idea. In fact, once my manager had finished talking about it, one girl said that she would need to talk to her after the meeting. Okay, whatever.

I'm not really worried about the whole thing, I just wonder why some people are the way they are. On top of the hour-long meeting that the above-mentioned girl had with our manager after the team meeting, I also heard some definite whispering going on. Why can't they just accept me and the fact that I am trying to better myself. And it's not like I'm going to make them bow down to me. I'm going to be doing something that will certainly make their jobs quite a bit easier. But they just can't look at it that way, I guess. In all honesty, I believe that a few of them wouldn't be able to see through their green veil of jealousy no matter what I did for them.

So, that brings me back to the peaks and valleys thing. I'm hoping that I'm wrong, but I feel like I'm about to dip down into another deep valley. I just pray that when I get down there, I'll be able to find a rope or something to hold on to in order to climb back up the next peak.

***UPDATE - 1:48pm***
Whoa! That was a fast slide! We just found out that one of our team members has to go on maternity leave early. That means our workforce will be cut by 20%. Deep, dark valley, here I come!

Yay!

You're Snoopy!
Take What Famous Dog are You?
Created with Rum and Monkey's Personality Test Generator.

My husband thinks he's funny

I learned the other day that an ex-boyfriend of mine had married a girl from Russia. I figured after a crazy weekend with my dad being in the hospital and all, I would just kick back and relax tonight. No laundry, no kitchen cleaning, no nothing. So I made a little nest of sorts on the couch, stretched my laptop cord over, puffed up a pillow, turned on the TV, tuned into RadioBlog, and started doing some BlogExplosion surfing.

And I don't plan on moving until approximately 10:30pm.

Oh yeah. This is my kind of Monday night. Stay tuned for some comfort-inspired blog posts!

Monday Madness

Name 3 (or more, or less!) things...

1. ...you cannot live without.
Water, oxygen, and food.

2. ...you CAN live without, but cannot seem to part with.
My blanket, my husband, and my parents (okay, that's technically 4, but who's counting?!)

3. ...you wish to accomplish this COMING week.
Lose 5 pounds, start walking again, and finish several of my work audits.

4. ...you have accomplished this PAST week.
Gained even more respect for my dad, saw the right man win his 2nd term, and cleaned out my closet for the winter.

5. ...on your holiday (or non-holiday) 'wish list.'
A new sofa and/or loveseat, a puppy, and a professional massage.

6. ...you would like to change about yourself.
My weight (less), my temper (less), and my spirituality (much, much more).

7. ...you like about yourself.
My eyes, my intelligence, and my tender heart.

8. ...you should be doing right now instead of what you ARE doing.
Working, drinking water, and, uh, working.

9. ...in your life that could use a little more organization.
My laundry pile, my craft room, and my medicine schedule.

You now have my permission to barf

Just when you think you've seen it all...

Jones Soda Co. He is doing so great! I'm very pleased and thankful for his progress. He should be back to his old self in no time. I went to see him at lunch, and he was acting up as usual. Mom was there, and she was good, too. I think the stress of it all was really getting to her last night. But I think she got some rest and feels better now.

I'm trying to eat a little better today. Since Dad's stroke, I've just been eating whatever I've wanted. Food, unfortunately, is my comfort in times like these. So far all I've had is a cup of coffee and a ham & cheese crossaint. I'll probably have a bowl of cereal for dinner. And I need to drink some water, too.

Work has been typically nuts for a Monday today, too. Everyone wants everything yesterday. Luckily, most of the people I work with have been understanding about my Dad being in the hospital and me being absent last Thursday & Friday.

Well, I better get back to it... more to come. (I took a quick peek at Monday Madness, and I am looking forward to playing around with that later.)

Feelings...whoa, whoa, whoa, feelings...

You represent... hope.
You're quite a daydreamer and can be a hopeless romantic. Why? Because it seems like everyone else has. I figured why not.

I have spent a good portion of this Sunday afternoon surfing blogs and earning credits. I would like to find several good daily reads, but so far, most of the blogs I've seen are disappointing and/or downright scary. But I'm holding out hope. I know there are lots of good blogs out there. I just have to dig down into the dirt of the blogosphere to find them.

Sunday Brunch

Fruits and Vegetables

"The finest qualities of our nature, like the bloom on fruits, can be preserved only by the most delicate handling. To me, being able to eat those fresh vegetables are almost the only good thing about summer. Fruit-wise, I really like peaches and pears.

2) How many servings of fruits and vegetables do you eat a day?
Nowhere near enough! I am humbled and so thankful for this great news. On top of his health being restored, this hospital visit as well as the follow-up doctor visits, will all be free since Dad was part of a clinical study. And since my parents aren't exactly rolling in cash, this is yet another blessing straight from God. And I thank Him.

Dad's mouth is still a little droopy and he has trouble chewing and swallowing, but those symptoms should continue to improve over the next few weeks and months. It is pitiful to see him like this for now, but at least we know that he will be back to normal (well, what is considered normal for Dad, anyway!) in no time.

I have always been a "Daddy's girl" so this episode doesn't change things. If anything, I'm even more of a Daddy's girl.

Life is what happens...

...when you're busy making other plans.

My father had a stroke yesterday. Thankfully to the Lord, it is not too bad and he is expected to recover. In fact, he has already shown amazing progress. You really never think about how much you love someone until it becomes a possibility that you could lose them. I've made a vow to myself to spend lots more quality time with him.

In other news, I'm gleefully delighted with the outcome of the 2004 US election. For some odd reason, it's not very popular to be a 20-something conservative woman, but I don't care. We won. And frankly, I'm enjoying seeing the left melt under the red hot heat of a clear victory.

Hopefully, my life will eventually turn back to normal. I was really looking forward to getting back to a routine this week after last week's vacation. But God had other plans, and that's fine with me. Perhaps next week will be a little more hectic at work and calm in my personal life.

Winter is on her way!

I just checked the radar at Weather.Com, and there is a line of rain and storms headed toward the East Coast. That's winter! Here in North Georgia, in late October or early November, we usually have a squall of thundershowers move fairly quickly through the area, and the next day reveals cooler, crisper air with that familiar winter bite. I can't wait. I love winter!
